UPS Batteries
A UPS with damaged or failing batteries is like a parachute with holes: it will open when you pull the rip-cord but the landing may not be quite what you were expecting!
An uninterruptible power supply is nothing without its batteries; it’s the batteries that provide power in the event of a mains failure. Old or badly maintained batteries pose a real and often hidden threat!
Lead Acid Batteries
All lead acid batteries, wet or gel, are prone to natural decay. This is caused by metals and acid sharing the same plastic container—but that’s what a battery is! Natural degrading is typically about 5% per annum, depending on the type and brand of battery used, so when you pull the electrical rip-cord you need to be sure that your batteries are in tiptop condition. If not, the autonomy time will be dramatically reduced and a planned, safe shutdown won’t be achieved.
Battery Life
Battery life is also affected by temperature. Borri's three-phase UPS are fitted with temperature-compensated chargers but, regardless of how good the charger technology is, batteries need to be checked and tested at least once a year and fully load-tested every two years.
